Project: community4you AG
Software becomes obsolete from the beginning of its utilization. Therefore the open-EIS based information system of community4you is subject to an ongoing software reengineering process. The project "WebCOM" brings innovations to this system which has been used as a tool for communication, planning and implementation of customer projects for years. The project involved the development of a web-based collaboration manager and an associated offline client with an intuitive user interface which can be used on the basis of the comm.kms knowledge management system and the open-EIS integration platform.
Challenge
Acknowledgments and feedback from customers and project partners working with the information system helped community4you to optimize suggestions and requests for important additional functions, especially concerning user-friendliness.
Solution
The "WebCOM" project has set an important milestone for the information system, as - first and foremost - the user interface enables intuitive usage. The basic functional features deliberately resemble Microsoft standard applications and common Internet services in order to shorten training times and ensure a high level of user acceptance. The user interface in any language simplifies cooperation between international project groups.
Furthermore, project documents are centrally and personally accessible to all employees. All required applications are available under a common interface. Important project information can be posted directly on the web or printed as a document at any time; communication streams will be bundled and documentable.
As long as the open-EIS security settings and specific permission configurations allow, all information can be retrieved and distributed by a web browser from anywhere and anytime. In addition to the online version, there is also an offline version that lets the user access his data even without an Internet connection, which is then synchronized with the Web system once the Internet connection is activated. It also supports basic functions such as platform and operating system independence alongside web service interfaces for connecting other external software programs.
