The European learning partnership project "e-Portfolio - Implementation of e-Portfolio in Language Learning for Adults" opens up the potential of "new media" in advanced and adult education in the field of foreign language assessment. The project aims at developing a web-based foreign language assessment system with extensive assessment and competence management functionalities. This was achieved with the integration platform open-EIS and the Learning Management System comm.lms.
Challenge
The purpose of the project was to develop and apply a language portfolio for formal and informal language learning.
Solution
The language portfolio was combined from several components to form an intelligent solution. It consists of a Language Passport which tracks the learner's progress and contains the short form of a language self-assessment according to the European Framework of Reference for Languages. The portfolio contains a significant collection of the learner's own language records, which show the progress of the language through self-assessment and external assessment, including language certificates. In the learning biography, the learner is presented in detail using the standard European CV and work samples of his or her foreign language career. Primarily, the Language Portfolio gives learners the opportunity to become aware of their foreign language skills and to notice both weaknesses and strengths.
Hence, community4you created a web-based online course of the "Swiss version of the European Language Portfolio" for this project. The content was prepared pedagogically and conceptually and provided to the learners to assess their English language skills in the "e-Portfolio Campus". The evaluation modules are based on language levels A1-C2 standardized by the European Framework of Reference for Languages. After the individual modules have been completed, the learner receives precise feedback on his or her language level for the assessed foreign language.

The cooperation took place within the scope of a cooperation between the Spanish language school Escuela Oficial de Idiomas de Murcia, the Lithuanian Alytaus Kolegija, the Ottilie Schoenewald Weiterbildungskolleg der Stadt Bochum and community4you.
